This Thursday, May 8, in an event held at the ITUREM, the destination Iguazú, birthplace of the Iguazú Falls – one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in the world, officially received the international certification “Biosphere”, which recognizes the city as the first sustainable tourist destination in Argentina.
The emotional event was attended by Lic. Fabián Román- Regional Coordinator of the program “Transforming the Future” and Biosphere for Latin America, who presented the certificate to the president of the Municipal Tourism Body of Iguazú (ITUREM) – Lic. Leopoldo Lucas. During his presentation, Román shared the progress made during the first two years of the program and presented the next challenges of the plan for the period 2025–2028.
This recognition marks a milestone for the city of Puerto Iguazú, the birthplace of the Iguazú Falls – one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in the world, and reflects the commitment of the entire community to a more responsible, inclusive and respectful tourism development model with the natural environment.
With great joy and emotion, Mr. Leopoldo Lucas stressed that “this work for sustainability in the destination is key so that our people can live better and so that tourists from all over the world continue to choose us. It is a construction that is done together, which puts Iguazú as a national and international example of responsible and sustainable tourism.”
He also stressed “globally there is a growing demand for sustainable tourism. Tourists are increasingly aware of the environmental and social impact, and are looking for destinations and experiences that prioritize sustainability. That is, they choose destinations that respect the environment, benefit local communities and offer authentic and responsible experiences. So it is doubly happy for the achievement obtained for our destination Iguazú.”
The Biosphere certification, promoted by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (RTI), aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, validates the efforts of the city of Puerto Iguazú in areas such as environmental management, local economy, quality of life, culture and government.
