The authorities from Peru want to facilitate the arrival of more tourists to the Peruvian Wonder of Machu Picchu, a place recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage of humanity.

In order to concrete this, a new international airport will be built in the rural municipality of Chinchero, located 30 kilometers from the city of Cusco, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Although there is already a nearby airport for the entry of tourists, its size doesn’t allow the landing of a larger aircraft.

However, a group of about 200 Peruvian and foreign historians, anthropologists and scientists sent a letter to Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra, asking him to change the location of the airport. They believe that the new airport will cause “irreparable damage to Machu Picchu and its surroundings”.
