On August 13, 2012, the Amazon was officially recognized as one of the 7 wonders of the natural world in a colorful and emotional ceremony that took place in the city of Iquitos with the presence of the President of the Republic, authorities, representatives of the New 7 Wonders Foundation and the participation of the population, who celebrated this act collectively and with great joy.
The contest organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation began with a total of 454 nominations from around the world, then went to a second phase where there were 261 places and then were 77, until reaching a phase of 30 finalists who participated in the last stage of the contest.
The voting campaign was online and millions of people from all over the world participated. The seven winners of the contest for the New 7 Wonders of the Natural World were: The Amazon (South America), Iguazu Falls (Argentina and Brazil), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Komodo (Indonesia), Jeju Island (South Korea), Table Mountain (South Africa) and the underground river of Puerto Princesa (Philippines).
