It was announced last monday by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, as a way to offer security to citizens. Before long, at Rio’s beaches it will be obligatory to social distance and reserve space on the sand in advance via an app.
Mayor Crivella also stated that Rio’s famous beaches could only fully reopen with clearly demarcated areas to keep people apart. The city that hosts Christ the Redeemer -one of the New 7 Wonders of the World- expects these kind of measures will have an effect on Rio’s population.
Rio authorities closed beaches for everyone in March to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, and in July reopened the Rio oceanfront for swimming, but sitting on the sand is still off limits.
