During a press conference, the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro officially cancelled the classic New Year’s Eve beach celebration. The city that hosts Christ the Redeemer -one of the New 7 Wonders of the World- will be having a series of celebrations online, as a way to keep the festive spirit alive.

Even though it had been previously reduced in assistance and format, the final decision was taken last week. Mayor Marcelo Crivella said in a statement that the government “opted to cancel the event out of respect for all of the victims, and to prioritize security for all. The party will be once we obtain good results from the vaccine”.

Authorities also announced the cancellation of the city’s worldwide famous Carnival, usually held in February. However, in the statement they also left open “the possibility of having a later off-season event if the vaccination campaign is successful”.
