The tourism sector in the country that hosts the Great Wall, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, is experiencing a significant boost due to the five day May Day holiday coming next month. This year’s holiday coincides with the centenary of the country’s Communist Party in June, offering an exceptional opportunity for “Red Tourism”.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Red Tourism is a way to “promote visits to sites with significance of revolutionary history” while engaging domestic travels. Official data show that from 2004 to 2019, the number of red tourism trips made each year increased from 140 million to 1.41 billion.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) stated that the five-day May Day holiday will fully release the transportation demand in the country after being suppressed by the pandemic and it is expected to register similar numbers during the anniversary in June.
