Even though statistics showed a 83% decrease in international tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2021, the Confidence Index of the UNWTO points out the sector’s strong confidence on a gradual recovery based on vaccination processes and strategic destinations such as the New 7 Wonders of the World and Nature.
According to the World Tourism Organization, from January to March 2021 destinations around the world received nearly 180 million less international visitors compared to the same time last year. From the asked tourism referents, 40% expects a rebound in 2021 while 60% plans to see it during 2022.
UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, stated that “there is significant pent-up demand and we see confidence slowly returning. Vaccinations will be key for recovery, but we must improve coordination and communication while making testing easier and more affordable if we want to see a rebound for the summer season in the northern hemisphere.”
