James Vos, a Mayco member who specialises in economic growth and tourism, made the statistics public following an event at Muizenberg Beach to promote the Pocket-Friendly Guide, which strives to provide inexpensive experiences throughout the Metro.

Vos claimed that the city’s tourism bounce-back strategy, which aims to boost supply and demand from selected source markets, including domestic travellers, is to thank for tourism recovery.

One of the main tourist attractions in Cape Town is Table Mountain, voted among the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Table Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in South Africa, attracting 4.2 million people every year for various activities.

“The preliminary results are showing a huge rebound and, in some cases, surpassing pre-Covid-19 numbers”, Vos stated. He noted that Cape Town was anticipating remarkable performances in arrivals and forward bookings. For instance, the Cape Town International Airport handles up to 30 000 passengers daily.

With the help of their city-to-city partnerships, Vos ensured that his team at the City’s Economic Growth Directorate and Cape Town Tourism is dedicated to increasing these numbers even further.

“At the same time, we will keep doing all in our power to remove obstacles that prevent the growth of the tourism sector, such as adopting open skies agreements and introducing a remote worker visa,” Vos added.
