The cultural richness of Peru is vast and unique, considering its incomparable archaeological, monumental, and museum-based heritage, as well as the rich record of expressions, traditions, and regional customs inherited from millennial civilizations and enriched with the blend of cultures.
These are the main reasons why Peru has retained the South America’s Leading Cultural Destination title in the 2023 regional edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA). This is the eighth time that Peru has claimed the top spot in this category and the sixth time in a row.
This new recognition, through which the country has prevailed over Argentina (winner in the 2016 edition), Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay, confirms why Peru is the leading cultural destination par excellence, which captivates tourists and constitutes one of the main reasons for visiting Peruvian territory.
Thanks to such a prodigious multicultural heritage, which is recognized by domestic and foreign visitors, Peru was also crowned as South America’s Leading Cultural Destination in the following editions: 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
In addition to this recognition, Peru has received three other accolades at the World Travel Awards 2023 in the categories of “South America’s Leading Culinary Destination”, “South America’s Leading Destination” and “South America’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2023: Machu Picchu”. This isn’t the only international recognition Machu Picchu has received, on July 7, 2007, Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
