Tourism industry experts estimate that tourist spending in 2024 could increase 64% compared to 2023, and will amount to about 177 billion euros, an estimate that includes a wide range of services, from accommodation to transport, as well as the assistance to cultural events, sports competitions and purchases.
In absolute terms, the analysis provides that more than 226 million tourists will choose Italy as a holiday destination this year and will generate more than 809 million overnight stays, data that also include internal tourism, which will contribute significantly to the recovery of the sector.
In 2023 the most visited destinations were: Rome – where is the coliseum, one of the new 7 wonders of the world – Florence and Venice, as well as other cities and towns of art and history.
Vittorio Messina, president of Assault (official site of the Italian Tourism Federation), said in relation to these results, that “tourism once again demonstrates its resilience and its ability to be a leading sector for the economy” in Italy.
2023 closed with 445.3 million visits
This number represents a significant increase of 8.1 percent, in relation to the results achieved last year.
According to a report presented by the Center for Tourism Studies of Florence, one of the determining factors in this growth was the increase of 13.7 percent of visitors from abroad, which added 228.5 million.
For the first time, the data of 2023 are higher than those of the period before the pandemic, since in 2019 the presence of tourists was 436.7 million, approximately 8.6 million less than this year.
The report, released in the official site of the Italian Tourism Federation (Assault), reflected a 9.3 percent increase in guests in hotel facilities, with an estimated presence of 276.2 million, while in the extrahoter sector The growth was 6.1 percentage points, with 169.1 million overnight stays.
The most popular holiday types in 2023 were the accommodations in the so -called art cities (Rome, Florence and Venice, among others), with a growth of 11.4 percent, as well as in the mountains, where the rise reached the 11.1 percentage points.
The study appreciates that this positive and predicted trend will be maintained that in 2024 there will be a 108 percent increase in foreign visitors and 111 percent in overnight stays.
