Mexico, owner of warm beaches and owner of a rich history, among which the Chichen Itza is told, the most famous temple of the Mayan city, which was the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization and is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World since 2007, reported that the population employed in the tourist sector of the country amounted to 4 million 861,000 people employed in the second quarter of 2024. Thus, tourism employment represents 9% of national employment.

The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, highlighted that the recovery in tourism employment is maintained, showing in the period April-June 2024 a growth of 0.6% more in its quarterly comparison, equivalent to 29,488 more people employed, compared to the 4 million 831 thousand people employed in the previous quarter.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that in his annual comparison, tourism employment recorded an increase of 148,058 people employed in the sector producing tourist goods and services, equivalent to a growth of 3.1% compared to the second quarter of 2023.

He stressed that tourism employment during the second quarter of 2024, exceeded by 8.3%, that is 373,496 people, to the historical figure recorded of personnel employed in the tourism sector in the first quarter of 2020, before the pandemic, when 4 million 487,000 people employed were registered.

The calculation of Tourism Employment for the second quarter of 2024 was based on the National Employment and Employment Survey (New edition) (ENOEN) of INEGI and the methodology approved by the Specialized Technical Committee of Economic Statistics of the Tourism Sector (CTEEEST), composed of INEGI, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (STPS), the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and Sectur.

The head of Sectur highlighted the growth of tourism employment in Mexico, especially the importance of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, which together with large companies are generators of formal jobs, and which in turn contribute to generating economic spills in the destinations.
