The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that, according to the publication of the World Tourism Barometer of UN Tourism, with the arrival of 45 million tourists, Mexico ranked second among the most visited destinations on the American continent in 2024.

“The fact that Mexico has received 45 million international tourists in 2024, 7.4 percent more than the previous year, confirms that our country is a world tourism power,” he said.

In Mexico, in addition to its warm beaches, one of the most visited places by tourists is the Chichén Itza, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

According to a publication by UN Tourism – the specialized agency of the United Nations that is dedicated to the promotion of responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism for all – it highlighted that Mexico has consolidated itself as one of the leading destinations in arrivals of international visitors in the region, which reflects its strategic position and the worldwide recognition of its cultural, natural and gastronomic offer; only after the United States (72.4 million) and well above Canada (19.9 million) and the Dominican Republic (8.5 million).

The World Tourism Barometer is a report that has been published annually since 2003 and monitors short-term tourism trends and offers an updated analysis of international tourism, providing governments, companies and academics with a clear view of recent behavior and the upcoming prospects of global tourism.

The official recalled that the positive trend was maintained during the first half of 2025, with the arrival of 23.4 million international tourists, 7.3 more than in the same period of 2024 and 6.2 percent more than in 2019. This figure was higher than the total number of tourists that Canada received throughout 2024.

Rodríguez Zamora also highlighted the great moment that the arrival of cruise ships to the different ports of Mexico is going through, since in the first half of the year they received 5.7 million passengers, which represents an increase of 9.6 percent compared to 2024 and 20.8 percent compared to 2019.

As for the spending of hikers, he reported that the economic spill reached 484.2 million dollars, which is equivalent to a growth of 11.3 percent compared to the previous year and 49.4 percent in relation to the same period of 2019.
