The first Tourist Tianguis of Mexico in China,. brought together representatives of Baja California, Chiapas, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán and Nayarit, as well as the Maya Train and Grupo Mundo Maya, who made the tourist, gastronomic and artistic wealth of Mexico known to travel agencies, specialized media, tourism companies and the general public.
The Mayan Train runs through 5 states of the Yucatan Peninsula, the most traveled route being the one that connects the cities of Mérida and Cancun, and has the Chichen Itzá – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World – almost halfway. This facilitates transportation for people who are in Quintana Roo to Chichén Itzá and also to continue to the city of Mérida or in the opposite direction.
The Tianguis was held on September 25 and 26, 2025 in the city of Beijing, and is a public and tourist diplomacy initiative organized by the Embassy of Mexico in China, in coordination with the central offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and carried out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, as well as with strategic actors.
His objective was to show all the participants the wealth of our country; promote tourist and cultural flows between China and Mexico; attract investments and generate synergies that result in a closer relationship between both nations.
With the assistance of more than 400 tour operators and companies in the sector, as well as Mr. Zheng Hao, Director General of the Bureau of Exchange and International Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, invited travelers from that country to explore national attractions and participate in world-class events held in Mexico.
“The Tourist Tianguis of Mexico in China represents an opportunity to diversify the tourist offer and consolidate the arrival of Chinese tourists, one of the markets with the highest average expenditure, and which this year entered the top 10 nationalities that visit Mexico,” said Rodríguez Zamora.
On behalf of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the General Director of Tourism Diplomacy and Connectivity, Patricia Angélica Quiles Martínez, thanked the work that this representation has done to materialize this Tourist Tianguis, which will be a window to the different natural, cultural, heritage and gastronomic attractions of Mexico.
Over two days, nine panels and seminars were held focused on the tourist offer of the participating entities. In addition, the importance of international events, such as the next edition of the World Cup, was addressed and relevant information was provided for Chinese travelers. Additionally, the event was attended by the Folklore Ballet of the state of Nayarit and the Dragon mariachi, from Guangdong province.
During the tour, there was a meeting with the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Sun Yeli, which allowed to deepen the opportunities for joint collaboration for tourism promotion and air connectivity. Likewise, bilateral meetings were held with tour operators, airlines, hotel companies, Chinese travel agencies and digital platforms focused on tourism, key to strengthening strategic alliances that facilitate air connectivity and the marketing of Mexican destinations, promoting tourist packages that integrate culture, gastronomy, nature and authentic experiences, and thus ensuring a continuous flow of quality visitors.
As a result of the Tianguis, 141 B2B business meetings were held between participating entities, agencies and Chinese tour operators, as well as six meetings between three states of Mexico and provinces of China that already have or show interest in establishing an agreement on the matter.
As part of the event, on September 22, the Gastronomic Week of Mexico was inaugurated in China, providing a unique opportunity for the Chinese public to enjoy authentic traditional dishes prepared by the renowned Mexican chef Paola Vargas. Until the closure of Tianguis, more than 300 diners had participated in this activity. Likewise, the “M Seal” was awarded – distinctive by the Mexican Academy of Gastronomy through the Representations of Mexico abroad – to restaurants that meet criteria established by the Academy, and standards of authenticity in the use of ingredients, techniques, processes and trained personnel in Mexican gastronomy. The Gastronomic Week of Mexico in China ended successfully on Sunday, September 28.
With these actions, Mexico seeks to strengthen its positioning as an important partner for China in terms of tourism, culture and business, while reaffirming its commitment to consolidate itself as a competitive and diverse tourist destination, capable of attracting new international markets and strengthening the economy through tourism.
