The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, highlighted that religious tourism in the country is consolidated as an engine of economic and social development that promotes Shared Prosperity in communities, since it mobilizes about 40 million people annually in different destinations of the country generating an economic spill of 25 billion Mexican pesos.
“Mexico is an extraordinary country. I invite everyone to tour its beaches, its Magic Towns, to get to know its culture and to enjoy its gastronomy. Religious tourism is fundamental: more than 40 million Mexicans participate each year in religious tourism activities,” he said.
Among the destinations with the highest influx are the Basilica of Guadalupe, as well as San Juan de los Lagos, Juquila and Chalma, which are part of routes that integrate heritage, identity and tourist vocation.
In addition, one of the points that is always visited is the Chichen Itzá, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
Likewise, in Mexico City, the representation of the Viacrucis in Iztapalapa of Easter is consolidated as one of the most emblematic cultural and religious expressions of the country. This tradition, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for its community and historical value, brings together millions of people every year and predicts an influx of more than two million visitors by 2026, especially during Holy Thursday and Good Friday, when the highest concentration of attendees is recorded.
Holy Week
The head of the Ministry of Tourism reported that, according to Concanaco Servytur Mexico, during Holy Week 2026 an economic spill of more than 300 billion pesos is projected at the national level, driven mainly by tourism activity linked to traditions.
He also recalled that in this holiday period from March 29 to April 12, 4.03 million tourists are expected to arrive at the country’s main destinations, which represents an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the 3.93 million recorded in 2025. During this period, an average hotel occupancy of 63.85 percent is estimated nationwide.
