This was stated during his stay in Lima by Jean Paul de la Fuente, Director of the New7Wonders Foundation, in an interview with a Peruvian media outlet. On the occasion he said “we want to work to solve the problem and not to get the status of Wonder of the World.”
And he added “but of course, if they do nothing to provide solutions, the risk remains.”
In addition, the international organization warned that administrative paralysis and changes of authorities prevent solving infrastructure problems, tourist overload and deficiencies in the experience of visitors.
The manager recalled that he has sent repeated statements to the Peruvian government, but that the problems remain unsolved. And he attributed that lack of official reaction to “a period of political and administrative inactivity” due to the constant changes of ministers and sectoral authorities due to the political instability of Peru, which in the last five years has had four leaders in the Executive.
Anyway, De la Fuente trusted that whoever is elected as president on June 7 (the right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori or the leftist Roberto Sánchez), is fully committed to his advice and determination to revitalize Machu Picchu so that he can once again be “a truly credible wonder.”
In that context, the Foundation issued a statement:
COMMUNICATION TO THE PERUVIAN PEOPLE AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
Mrs. Keiko Sofía Fujimori Higuchi
Mr. Roberto Helbert Sánchez Palomino
Following our statement to the people and the Peruvian State of September 13, 2025, New7Wonders, the world authority of the 7 Wonders, declares the following:
* We maintain our commitment to protect the credibility and status of all the New 7 Official Wonders of the World under our aegis, including Machu Picchu in Peru.
* We observe that, since our important statement of September last year, there has been no progress or change in all the problems that are specifically undermining the credibility of Machu Picchu as an official Wonder. All challenges and therefore all risks remain.
* Of course we understand that this lack of progress, despite the best efforts of some well-intentioned people, is mainly due to the quasi-political administrative paralysis that all of Peru has faced since then.
* Now that the time is approaching, we hope that Peru completes its democratic process to choose its new political leadership, we want to ensure that the fundamental and crucial challenges for Machu Picchu occupy a priority place on the agenda to ensure that the path towards a new intelligent strategy for the future is undertaken.
* As an objective, neutral and apolitical global organization, we have contacted both presidential candidates to assure them that we are personally available to dialogue with both equally about the details of the challenges and, above all, about the plans to solve them, in order to ensure that this is part of their new management.
* Everyone must understand that the status quo and inaction will not be acceptable to us, nor to any decent and proud Peruvian. The world also demands positive change from all of us.
* We hope and trust that whoever is chosen is fully committed, with our advice and determination (including through our PEMARA plan – Wonderful Strategic Plan), to revitalize Machu Picchu so that it can once again be a truly credible Wonder.
* In fact, we have an even bigger dream, a dream that can come true with everyone’s genuine effort: make Machu Picchu a standard-bearer, an example to follow for all 7 Wonders of New7Wonders around the world.
