Experts from all over the world claim that sustainable tourism represents the future of tourism. Destinations such as the New 7 Wonders of Nature seek sustainable and responsible development with the environment. However, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has been trending since 2012 and experts think it is time to do something about it.
According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education.”
The President of the Global Governance Philanthropy Network and co-founder of NEXUS, Jonah Wittkamper, reviewed Amazon’s current situation and provided its perspective into an essay on how it might be possible to slow or even reverse deforestation by investing in conservation.
With millions of potential customers, ecotourism in the Amazon rainforest could become a much larger industry, and this would result in an improvement in the ecosystem.
