On March 30 a new edition of Earth Hour was celebrated along the world. The campaign was organized by the NGO World Wildlife Fund and had millions of people from 180 countries who turned off the lights between 20:30 and 21:30 hours according to the time zone of each city- in order to highlight the use of energy and the need to take care of the nature. “We are the first generation to know that we are destroying the world, and we can be the last ones to do something about it” said the NGO WWF.
For this year’s edition, many of the New 7 Wonders of the World decided to join the campaign: the Table Mountain in South Africa, the Great Wall in China, the Roman Coliseum in Italy, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil and the Petronas Twin Towers, located in the Wonder City of Kuala Lumpur.
Promoted by the World Wildlife Fund -and the support from the United Nations- the movement continues the actions initiated in 2007, when it was held for the first time in the Sydney, Australia.
The first Earth Hour was held in Sydney on March 31, 2007 between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The saving of energy in the city during that time was estimated between 2.1% and 10.2%, while the participation of the inhabitants was calculated in 2.2 million.
