Vietnam’s province of Quang Ninh -home to Halong Bay, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature- has become one of the most successful destinations in implementing smart tourism solutions.

According to global standards, smart tourism refers to the application of communications technology to ease interaction between managers, businesses and tourists.

In this sense, an integrated tourism data as well as a tourism portal were one of the top priorities in smart tourism, according to Quang Ninh authorities.

Some of the measures were: the launch of official platforms where visitors can book entire packages with guidance; the supply of free wifi at airports, bus stations and tourism areas; as well as the use of GPS on every vessel at Ha Long Bay as a way to ensure tourist safety. The local government is looking forward to the future, since they are expected to apply artificial intelligence to help holidaymakers select and design their own itinerary.

Last year Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, announced a master plan that would turn Ha Long city into a world-class tourism and service hub by 2050. According to the plan, the Wonder of Nature will be a sustainable sea tourism city with modern socio-economic infrastructures.
