As a way to provide better services to domestic and foreign tourists visiting the country home to Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and shared home of the Amazon, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, authorities announced a new project to become a Smart Tourism Destination.
According to Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Claudia Cornejo, Peru took the first step in order to become a Smart Tourism Destination by improving the use of technology and innovative solutions for the recovery of the sector.
Cornejo signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Spain’s Industry, Commerce, and Tourism Minister, Reyes Maroto, in order to start a joint work with Spain’s State Mercantile Enterprise for the Management of Tourism Innovation and Technologies (SEGITTUR). The first period of the arrangement will consist “in the development of a pilot plan that will provide a roadmap to be completed in three years”.
SEGITTUR contemplates five areas in order to consider a destination smart: innovation, accessibility, technology, sustainability, and governance. Perú’s minister pointed out that “the boost to develop Smart Destinations in Peru will provide an opportunity to transform tourism into a more competitive, smarter, and more sustainable sector; promoting innovation and the use of technology in its processes”.
