Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, a senior officer of the Indian Archaeological Service in the city of Agra, said that the baby feeding room will be established for the first time in July to help “millions of mothers who visit the Taj Mahal with their babies”.
It is not a minor fact that the most important monument in India, to which millions of tourists arrive every year, creates a room for breastfeeding. Public breastfeeding still carries a social stigma in India, where women are expected to be covered from head to toe.
The ASI said that this was the first time it provided such an installation at any of the more than 3.600 monuments in India. “My hope is that more and more monuments, not only in India but around the world, replicate this plan so that women can feed their babies without problems” said Swarnkar.
