The peninsula of Yucatan -where Chichén Itzá, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, is located- was chosen as the place to carry out the fifth edition of the Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, the most important sustainable tourism event in Latin America.

The event was held at the Convention Center of the Hotel Paradisus Cancún in the state of Quintana Roo from September 6 to 9 and was attended by the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco, and the most important representatives of the tourism sector of the region.

The fifth edition of the event was held both in person and online, and had more than 500 attendees. According to organizers, the Cancun summit “brings together leading businessmen, government officials, academics and people interested in making tourism a comprehensive development tool, at the service of people, communities and territories.”

During his presentation, Torruco pointed out the progress made by tourism in Mexico and stated that “the tourism potential of a nation should not be measured based on the number of tourists received, but on the foreign exchange earned. Therefore, it is necessary to create, integrate and market new products that impact the consumer. Tourism is a tool for social reconciliation to promote the development of localities”.
