Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, was chosen as the World’s Leading Tourists Attraction 2021 in the latest edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA).
The winners were revealed on 16 December, where the ancient city of Machu Picchu was awarded as the “World’s Leading Tourists Attraction 2021” and Peru also achieved the “World’s Leading Cultural Destination” and “World’s Leading Culinary Destination” recognitions.
The executive president of Promperú, Amora Carbajal, stated that “we are proud of the important awards that our country is receiving, and that place us as one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. We will continue working to ensure that Peru continues with a firm process of safety and sustainability in each of the regions and tourist destinations that today welcome visitors from all over the world, where gastronomy and cultural heritage are a source of joy and admiration”.
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 and on its 28th anniversary, the WTA is expected to surpass the 2,033,494 votes registered in last year’s edition. However, to put this into context, by comparison this is less than half a percent of the global votes generated by the worldwide New7Wonders campaigns – over 600 million to date.
