The Pope headed his seventh Way of the Cross in front of the Roman Colosseum, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Pope Francis arrived at the historic site just after 9:00 pm and was received by local mayor Virginia Raggi in front of a crowd of more than 20,000 people, according to the Vatican.
This year the meditations for the Way of the Cross were written by the Italian nun Eugenia Bonetti, who focused her work on denouncing traffic of persons. At the end of the ceremony, Francis read a prayer in which he spoke of the poor, the hungry, the elderly, the abused children and the environment.
