In an attempt to become a more eco-friendly tourism destination, the New 7 Wonder of the World of Petra is starting to replace horses and mules with electric carts to transport visitors.

The decision comes after several projects were presented that aimed to turn Petra into a more accessible destination to elderly and disabled visitors, as well as to eliminate cases of animal mistreatment

The first phase of the transition consists of a small fleet of 10 rechargeable e-carts to take visitors through the city of Petra, and if the pilot test turns out well, the main objective is to fully replace horses and mules.

According to the head of the Petra Development and Tourism Regional Authority, Suleiman Farajat, some of the horses will be kept in order “to preserve the character of the place, as it is a world heritage site”.
