The climate summit brought together 50,000 participants in the city of Belém, in the heart of the Amazon, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in the World. Brazilian President Lula da Silva seeks that the natural environment promotes real commitments in the face of the global crisis.
Since Monday, November 10, the humid and thick air of the Amazon replaces the smell of oil that dominated last year’s UN climate conference in Baku, capital of the hydrocarbon producer Azerbaijan. With 50,000 participants gathered in the Brazilian city of Belém, COP30 begins its work with the mission of preventing the collapse of global cooperation in the face of climate change.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva insisted on holding the summit in the Amazon rainforest, despite the shortage of hotel infrastructure and the logistical challenges facing the organization. “It would be easier to hold the COP in a rich country,” he said in August. “We want people to see the real situation of the forests, of our rivers, of our people who live there,” he said.
The president seeks that negotiators, observers, businessmen and journalists feel closely the impact of climate change in a region where residents walk with umbrellas to protect themselves from the scorching morning sun and the showers that arrive in the afternoon.
The Amazon – one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in the World – is considered a key lung of the planet for its ability to absorb greenhouse gases, facing multiple threats: deforestation, illegal mining, pollution, drug trafficking and violations of rights against local and indigenous communities.
