The Huayna Picchu mountain reopened this Wednesday, July 1, 2026, to tourism, coinciding with the beginning of the high season of visits. The announcement was made by the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Cusco, after completing the specialized conservation and maintenance work in this iconic massif that appears in the background in the classic photos of Machu Picchu – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

For a month, specialists in conservation and maintenance of the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, carried out technical interventions along Route 3-A of Circuit 3 or Royal Circuit, from the control booth to the top of the mountain, with the purpose of preserving the stability, authenticity and integrity of the archaeological structures and optimizing safety conditions for visitors.

The work included the consolidation and maintenance of pre-Hispanic staircases, recovery and cleaning of retaining walls, maintenance of drainage systems and removal of vegetation, roots and mosses that affected archaeological structures.

Likewise, complementary structures were enabled, such as stairs and new railings with steel cable in the steepest steepest stretches, strengthening safety conditions along the route.

The executive director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco, Maritza Rosa Candia, highlighted that these interventions are part of the permanent actions to guarantee the adequate conservation of cultural heritage and a safe and orderly visit to one of the most emblematic destinations in the country.

With the reopening of Huayna Picchu, visitors will be able to access again the three routes enabled by Circuit 3: the Huayna Picchu mountain, the route to the Great Cave and the Huchuy Picchu mountain, expanding the route alternatives during the high tourist season.

These interventions are part of the permanent conservation program developed by the Ministry of Culture in the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, with the purpose of protecting this World Heritage, ensuring its proper management and offering a safe and quality visit experience for the national and international public.
