The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico – Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that, during the first five months of 2026, Mexico recorded the arrival of 42.87 million international travelers, which represented an increase of 8.8 percent compared to the same period of 2025.
It should be noted that Mexico is home to one of the New 7 Wonders of the World: the Chichen Itza, one of the most important sacred cities and ceremonial centers of the ancient Mayan civilization. This archaeological site arouses great interest, especially from international tourists.
“In more and more people choose to discover Mexico. Our country is experiencing a moment of great international projection and the results of tourism activity show that the confidence of travelers continues to be strengthened, boosting the well-being of communities and the development of our destinations,” he said.
He specified that, according to the International Travelers Survey (EVI) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), between January and May 2026 20.39 million international tourists arrived in the country, a figure 5.3 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. He also indicated that the income of foreign currency by international travelers reached 15 billion 869 billion dollars during the first five months of 2026, reflecting the importance of tourism as one of the main currency generators for the country.
He stressed that, in May 2026 alone, Mexico received 8.36 million international travelers and 3.92 million international tourists, which represented increases of 5.3 and 4.5 percent, respectively, compared to May 2025, consolidating the positive trend of the sector and the interest of travelers from around the world to know the national destinations.
Rodríguez Zamora stressed that these results reflect the joint work between the three orders of government, the private initiative and the host communities to strengthen tourism activity and consolidate Mexico as a global tourism power.
“The best example of the confidence that Mexico inspires is the millions of travelers who continue to choose our destinations. We will continue to strengthen a tourism that generates well-being, Shared Prosperity and projects the best image of our country to the world,” he said.
