The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico – Josefina Rodríguez Zamora – reported that June, the first month in which Mexico hosted the 2026 World Cup, represented an important dynamism for the host cities.
He specified that, according to data from the Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, the airports of the World Cup headquarters recorded the following increases: that of Mexico City (AICM) with 10.6 percent; that of Guadalajara with 6.2 percent; that of Monterrey with 42.2 percent and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) with 53.0 percent, compared to the arrival of foreign tourists recorded in June 2025.
“The 2026 World Cup allowed millions of people to turn to see Mexico (cradle of Chichen Itzá – one of the New 7 Wonders of the World) and discover the diversity of our destinations. The increase in the arrival of tourists to the host airports reflects the interest in getting to know our country and represents an opportunity for more visitors to tour our cities and the benefits of tourism reach more communities,” he said.
Likewise, the head of the Ministry of Tourism reported that during June 2026 one million 602 thousand 621 foreign tourists entered the country by air. Among the main issuing markets were the United States, with one million 174,871 tourists; Canada, with 84,954; and Colombia, with 72,465, which together represented 83 percent of the total.
He stressed that, during that month, the growth of tourists from Japan (131.7 percent), Colombia (74.4 percent), South Korea (46.7 percent), Brazil (29.4 percent), Guatemala (28.5 percent) and Germany (6.4 percent) stood out, markets that continue to show opportunities to strengthen the diversification of international tourism towards Mexico.
Rodríguez Zamora said that these results reflect both the dynamism generated by the celebration of the 2026 World Cup and the permanent work to strengthen international promotion and expand Mexico’s presence in high-potential markets, with the purpose of diversifying the origin of visitors and consolidating increasingly resilient and competitive tourism.
On the other hand, he added that, between January and June 2026, 10 million 764 thousand foreign tourists entered Mexico by air.
He specified that, during the first half of the year, Canada recorded the arrival of one million 831 thousand tourists, an increase of 7.6 percent compared to the same period of 2025, while Colombia reached 242,000 64 tourists, a figure 31.5 percent higher than that observed a year earlier.
Likewise, during the period from January to June, the growth of markets such as Brazil (19.3 percent), Japan (17.1 percent) and Switzerland (6.0 percent) stood out, behavior that reflects the importance of continuing to strengthen the diversification of the origin of international visitors.
The secretary explained that the behavior observed during June was also related to the international context that the airline industry is going through. In this environment, the United States, the main market issuing tourists to Mexico, recorded a variation of -12.1 percent compared to June 2025, accounting for one million 174,871 foreign tourists who entered the country by air.
