On its social networks, the New7Wonders Foundation congratulated India on August 15 for Independence Day. The message goes like this:
Happy Indian Independence Day!
India’s freedom is celebrated today, alongside a heritage shaped by thousands of years.
Its storey continues through the people, places, and traditions that remain part of our shared memory.
The Taj Mahal stands among the most recognisable of these places. Chosen as one of the New7Wonders of the World through a global campaign with over 100 million votes from people around the globe, it has become part of a storey shared by people across the world.
Happy Independence Day, India. May its history continue to be remembered, celebrated, and passed on.
It should be remembered that India became independent on August 15, 1947. That day ended almost 200 years of domination of the British empire thanks to a long process of resistance and civil disobedience led mainly by Mahatma Gandhi.
