Mexico continues developing the Maya Train, one of the country’s most important projects that aims to boost the tourism and economic sector in strategic destinations, including Chichen Itza, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

The latest information regarding the project is the development of gastronomic tourism for passengers on board, since it is one of the most important markets in Latin America. During the “Gastronomic and spiritual destination of the Tren Maya region” conference, the gastronomic specialist Dr. Antonio Montecinos Torres, explained the importance of this initiative.

Montecinos Torres pointed out that “gastronomic tourism promotes territorial increase thanks to its capacity to attract tourists to the producing areas, configuring itself as an ally of proximity tourism in rural spaces”.

“it is interesting to see how some destinations have been positioning themselves thanks to their material and immaterial gastronomic cultural heritage. We have to understand that gastronomy is much more than eating and drinking, we have to focus on a territory. If we talk about heritage, it must obviously be related to preservation, safeguarding, and rescuing the natural biodiversity”, he also pointed out.
