The Indonesia government will provide big discounts on flights for both foreign and local travelers in order to persuade tourists to keep visiting the country’s favorite tourist destinations as the global tourism industry faces an uncertain future due to the continuing coronavirus outbreak.
According to Transportation Minister, Budi Karya Sumadi, the government stimulus is aimed at boosting tourist in 10 major destinations: Batam, Bali, Yogyakarta, Silangit, Malang, Labuan Bajo, Lombok, Manado, Tanjung Pandan and Tanjung Pinang. “This program is expected to boost domestic tourist arrivals by 25 percent and international arrivals by 10 percent”, Budi said.
However, the country’s reliance on Chinese visitors makes it particularly vulnerable to the global tourism downturn caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Indonesia saw 16.1 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2019, with Chinese visitors contributing 12 percent of all foreign arrivals.
